Skin tags are harmless, but that does not make them any less irritating. They catch on clothing and jewellery, snag on necklaces, and tend to appear in exactly the places you notice them most, the neck, the eyelids, the underarms. CryoPen removes them in seconds, with no cutting, no stitches, and in most cases no visible scarring afterwards.

Here is exactly how CryoPen deals with skin tags, why the treatment approach differs slightly depending on where they appear on your body, and what to expect for each area.

What are skin tags, and why do they form?

Skin tags are small, soft growths made of loose collagen fibres and blood vessels, covered by ordinary skin. They are entirely benign, and removing them is almost always a matter of comfort or appearance rather than medical necessity.

They tend to form for a few clear reasons:

  • Friction, where skin repeatedly rubs against skin, clothing, or jewellery, which is why they cluster around the neck, underarms, groin, and eyelids
  • Age, since skin tags become more common as we get older
  • Genetics, with a clear hereditary link, if close family members have them, you are more likely to develop them too
  • Weight and hormonal factors, which can increase the likelihood of skin tags forming in areas of skin folds

How CryoPen removes a skin tag

A fine, precisely controlled jet of nitrous oxide is applied directly to the skin tag for a matter of seconds. The extreme cold, reaching around minus 89°C, freezes the tissue almost instantly, causing the fluid inside the cells to form ice crystals that rupture the cell membrane. The skin tag’s blood supply is cut off at the same time, and the body takes care of the rest, the tag naturally dries out, scabs, and falls away over the following one to two weeks.

Because the treatment is so precise, only the skin tag itself is affected, not the surrounding healthy skin, which is exactly why it is considered safe for delicate areas like the eyelids where other removal methods are far riskier.

Face

Skin tags on the face are often the ones patients are most keen to address, since they sit somewhere visible every single day. CryoPen’s pinpoint accuracy makes it particularly well suited to facial skin tags, where precision matters and there is very little margin for treating more tissue than necessary. Most facial skin tags are treated in a single, brief application, with healing following the standard one to two week timeline.

Peri-orbital area (around the eyes)

Skin tags around the eyes, including on the eyelids themselves, are one of the more delicate areas to treat, and also one of the areas where CryoPen genuinely excels compared with other removal methods. Because the device delivers nitrous oxide with millimetre precision, it can safely treat skin tags extremely close to the eye without affecting the surrounding skin or the eye itself. This is an area where experience and a steady, controlled hand matter enormously, and it is not one to consider treating anywhere other than a properly qualified clinic.

Lips

Skin tags on or around the lips are less common than in areas of heavy friction, but when they do appear, patients are understandably keen to have them treated quickly given how visible this area is. The lip and perioral area requires the same precision as the eyes, since the surrounding tissue is thin and sensitive. CryoPen’s pinpoint accuracy allows for accurate treatment of small lesions in this area without affecting the surrounding lip tissue, and healing generally follows the standard timeline.

Body (torso, underarms, and skin folds)

Skin tags on the body, particularly in the underarms, under the breasts, or around the groin and skin folds, are extremely common and are almost always friction-related. These areas can sometimes take slightly longer to heal fully, simply due to ongoing movement and friction from clothing, so aftercare guidance for these locations is worth following closely to support clean healing.

Hands

Skin tags on the hands and fingers are treated in the same precise way, with the advantage that this is a highly visible, easily monitored area during healing. Because hands are in near-constant use, extra care to avoid knocking or picking at the treated area is particularly important here.

Feet

Skin tags on the feet, including around the toes, respond just as well to CryoPen as anywhere else on the body. Given that feet are enclosed in socks and shoes for much of the day, keeping the area clean and appropriately covered during healing is worth paying particular attention to, to avoid friction interrupting the healing process.

Frequently asked questions

Our patients often ask:

Will it scar?
In the large majority of cases, CryoPen leaves no visible scarring, provided the healing scab is left to fall away naturally rather than being picked. Some temporary lightening or darkening of the skin can occur during healing, which generally fades over several weeks to a few months. For a deeper look at this specific question, read our guide on does CryoPen leave a scar. For the full recovery process and aftercare guidance, see our CryoPen recovery and aftercare guide.

How many sessions will you need?
Most skin tags are fully removed in a single session. Larger skin tags occasionally require a second treatment once the area has healed, but this is the exception rather than the rule for typical skin tags, particularly compared with warts and verrucas, which more commonly need a planned course of treatment.

Is CryoPen safe for skin tags?
CryoPen is a well-established, FDA-cleared and CE-marked technology with decades of clinical use in dermatology behind the underlying cryotherapy technique. It is considered safe for use on the face, neck, and other delicate areas when performed by a properly trained practitioner. For a full look at the evidence and safety profile, read our guide on is CryoPen safe.
