CryoPen for Skin Tags: What to Expect

Skin tags are harmless, but that does not make them any less irritating. They catch on clothing and jewellery, snag on necklaces, and tend to appear in exactly the places you notice them most, the neck, the eyelids, the underarms. Skin tags are small, soft growths made of loose collagen fibres and blood vessels, covered by ordinary skin. They are entirely benign, and removing them is almost always a matter of comfort or appearance rather than medical necessity.

They tend to form for a few clear reasons:

• Friction, where skin repeatedly rubs against skin, clothing, or jewellery, which is why they cluster around the neck, underarms, groin, and eyelids
• Age, since skin tags become more common as we get older
• Genetics, with a clear hereditary link, if close family members have them, you are more likely to develop them too
• Weight and hormonal factors, which can increase the likelihood of skin tags forming in areas of skin folds

A fine, precisely controlled jet of nitrous oxide is applied directly to the skin tag for a matter of seconds. The extreme cold, reaching around minus 89°C, freezes the tissue almost instantly, causing the fluid inside the cells to form ice crystals that rupture the cell membrane. The skin tag’s blood supply is cut off at the same time, and the body takes care of the rest, the tag naturally dries out, scabs, and falls away over the following one to two weeks.

Because the treatment is so precise, only the skin tag itself is affected, not the surrounding healthy skin, which is exactly why it is considered safe for delicate areas like the eyelids where other removal methods are far riskier.

Face

Skin tags on the face are often the ones patients are most keen to address, since they sit somewhere visible every single day. CryoPen’s pinpoint accuracy makes it particularly well suited to facial skin tags, where precision matters and there is very little margin for treating more tissue than necessary. Most facial skin tags are treated in a single, brief application, with healing following the standard one to two week timeline.

Peri-orbital area (around the eyes)

Skin tags around the eyes, including on the eyelids themselves, are one of the more delicate areas to treat, and also one of the areas where CryoPen genuinely excels compared with other removal methods. Because the device delivers nitrous oxide with millimetre precision, it can safely treat skin tags extremely close to the eye without affecting the surrounding skin or the eye itself. How many sessions will you need?

Larger skin tags occasionally require a second treatment once the area has healed, but this is the exception rather than the rule for typical skin tags, particularly compared with warts and verrucas, which more commonly need a planned course of treatment.
