CryoPen is one of the quickest, lowest-downtime treatments available for removing skin tags, warts, milia, and sun spots. There are no incisions and no stitches, but the skin does go through a genuine healing process afterwards, and knowing what is normal at each stage means you can heal with confidence rather than concern.
Recovery does vary slightly depending on the type of lesion treated, so this guide breaks down exactly what to expect for each.
CryoPen uses a precise jet of nitrous oxide, delivered at around minus 89°C, to freeze the targeted lesion in seconds.
This causes the cells within the lesion to form ice crystals and rupture, destroying the tissue while sparing the healthy skin around it. The visible healing process that follows is a normal, expected part of how the treatment works, not a sign that anything has gone wrong.
Skin tags. Expect a blister to form within a few hours, drying into a scab within 3 to 5 days. The scab typically falls away naturally within 7 to 14 days, revealing fresh pink skin underneath, which gradually blends with your natural skin tone over the following weeks. Larger skin tags occasionally need a second treatment to fully resolve.
Warts and verrucas. These often require more than one treatment, as the goal is to fully clear the virus responsible, not just the visible lesion. If a wart or verruca is still present after your first treatment, a follow-up session around 4 weeks later is common. Aftercare is otherwise the same as for any blister or scab.
Milia. As milia are small, superficial keratin-filled cysts, they typically flatten and disappear with treatment and require minimal aftercare beyond general blister care if any redness appears. Healing tends to be quicker and more straightforward than with other lesion types.
Sun spots and pigmentation. The area typically becomes slightly raised and mildly inflamed immediately afterwards, settling within 24 hours. Over the following day, a small crust forms, which can take up to a week, sometimes longer, to fully clear. Most pigmented lesions only need a single treatment.

A stinging or burning sensation during treatment is expected and typically lasts for a few seconds to a minute as the skin thaws.
Some mild tenderness in the hours afterwards is also normal, particularly if several lesions were treated in one session. Persistent pain, spreading redness, or signs of infection are not expected and should be raised with your practitioner promptly.
In most cases, CryoPen heals with no visible scarring, provided the area is left to heal naturally and is not picked at.
Temporary lightening or darkening of the skin can occur as part of the healing process and typically fades over several weeks to a few months. Patients with darker skin tones are somewhat more prone to this and may be advised on a slightly adjusted treatment approach to reduce this risk.
