Are Fat Dissolving Injections Right for Me?

Fat dissolving injections work exceptionally well for the right patient — and deliver disappointing results for the wrong one. The treatment is highly specific in what it can and cannot do, which makes patient selection the most important factor in determining outcome.

This guide sets out clearly who is well-suited to fat dissolving, who is not, and what to consider if you’re unsure.

Am I a Good Candidate for Fat Dissolving Injections?

What fat dissolving is — and is not

Before assessing candidacy, it helps to understand what the treatment actually does. Fat dissolving injections use deoxycholic acid to break down and permanently eliminate localised fat cells. Those cells are then cleared by the body’s lymphatic system over several weeks.

Fat dissolving is a body contouring treatment. It targets specific, defined pockets of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. It is not a weight loss solution, and it does not work on fat distributed broadly across the body.

This distinction determines almost everything about who is and is not a suitable candidate.

Who is a good candidate for fat dissolving?

1. You are close to your ideal weight

Fat dissolving works best on patients who are at or near a healthy weight but have one or more stubborn areas that do not respond to lifestyle changes. The classic example is a double chin on someone who is otherwise lean, or persistent love handles on someone who exercises regularly. The treatment refines and contours — it does not replace the need for a healthy weight foundation.

2. You have a localised, defined fat deposit

The best candidates have a clearly identifiable pocket of fat in a specific area: beneath the chin, along the jawline, around the abdomen, flanks, inner thighs, upper arms, or bra line. Fat dissolving performs best where there is a discrete deposit that can be targeted precisely. Diffuse fat spread across a large area responds less predictably.

3. You have good skin elasticity

Skin laxity is one of the most important factors in candidacy. When fat dissolving reduces volume in an area, the skin needs to contract around the new contour. Patients with good skin elasticity — typically younger patients, or those whose skin has retained its natural firmness — see the cleanest results. Where significant skin laxity is already present, reducing the underlying fat volume can worsen rather than improve the appearance. Your practitioner will assess this at consultation.

4. Your expectations are realistic

Fat dissolving produces gradual, progressive results over several weeks. Final results from a course of treatment are visible at around 6 to 8 weeks after the last session, and most patients require 2 to 4 sessions to achieve their goal. Candidates who understand this timeline — and are not expecting dramatic transformation from a single session — tend to be most satisfied with their outcomes.

5. You are in good general health

Fat dissolving is a minimally invasive procedure, but good general health is still a baseline requirement. No active skin infections, inflammatory conditions in the treatment area, or bleeding disorders should be present. A full medical history review takes place at every consultation at Dr Hass Clinic.

6. You are not pregnant or breastfeeding

Fat dissolving is not suitable during pregnancy or whilst breastfeeding. If either applies, treatment should be deferred until it does not.

Who is not a good candidate?

1. You are significantly overweight

If your goal is overall weight reduction rather than contouring a specific area, fat dissolving is not the right starting point. The treatment is designed for isolated deposits — attempting to use it as a substitute for weight loss will result in unmet expectations and is not clinically appropriate. Lifestyle changes should come first; fat dissolving addresses what remains afterwards.

2. You have significant skin laxity

Where the skin has already lost substantial elasticity — through age, weight loss, or other factors — removing fat volume underneath it can leave the skin looking looser rather than tighter. In these cases, a skin-tightening treatment may be a better primary option, or may need to be combined with fat dissolving for a good result. This is something your practitioner will assess honestly at consultation.

3. You have a condition affecting fat metabolism

Conditions such as lipodystrophy, which affect how the body processes and distributes fat, are a contraindication. The treatment mechanism relies on the body’s normal fat-processing pathways, which may not function as expected in these cases.

4. You have active skin problems in the treatment area

Any active infection, inflammation, or skin condition in or around the area to be treated rules out treatment until it has fully resolved. Injecting into compromised skin increases the risk of complications significantly.

5. You are taking blood thinners or have clotting disorders

Medications that affect blood clotting, or underlying clotting disorders, increase the risk of bruising and bleeding at the injection site. This should be disclosed fully at consultation so your practitioner can advise appropriately.

What areas can fat dissolving treat?

Fat dissolving can be used across a range of areas where localised fat deposits are present:

  • Double chin and submental area — the most common and best-evidenced treatment area
  • Jowls and lower face
  • Abdomen
  • Flanks and love handles
  • Upper arms
  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Bra fat and back rolls
  • Knees and banana rolls

Not all areas respond equally. The double chin and smaller facial deposits tend to show the most reliable and pronounced results. Larger body areas require more sessions and the change is more gradual. For a breakdown of how many sessions each area typically needs, see our guide to how many sessions of fat dissolving you need.

What should I expect if I am a good candidate?

If fat dissolving is appropriate for you, here is a realistic picture of the experience:

  • Sessions are spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart to allow the body to process results before the next treatment
  • Swelling is significant in the first 48 to 72 hours — particularly for the chin area — and is a normal part of the process
  • Results build progressively across sessions rather than appearing all at once
  • Final results are permanent — the treated fat cells do not return, provided weight remains stable

Is fat dissolving safe for good candidates?

For patients who meet the candidacy criteria, fat dissolving has a well-established safety profile. The active ingredient, deoxycholic acid, has been studied extensively in peer-reviewed clinical trials. Side effects are common but predictable and self-resolving — swelling, bruising, and tenderness in the days following treatment are expected and not a cause for concern.

Serious complications are rare and are largely technique-dependent rather than inherent to the treatment. For a detailed breakdown of the evidence and the real risks, see our article on whether fat dissolving injections are safe.

How do I know for certain if I am a candidate?

The honest answer is that a consultation with a qualified medical professional is the only reliable way to know. Candidacy depends on factors that require physical assessment — skin elasticity, fat deposit depth and volume, skin condition, and overall health — and cannot be determined accurately from a questionnaire or photographs alone.

At Dr Hass Clinic, consultations are conducted by Dr. Hasaneen Al Janabi, a GMC-registered doctor with a surgical background. We assess each patient individually, give an honest view of what fat dissolving can realistically achieve for them specifically, and recommend an alternative if it is not the right treatment. If fat dissolving is not suitable for you, we will tell you that clearly, and explain what might work better.
