Fat Dissolving Injections vs Liposuction

Both fat dissolving injections and liposuction permanently remove fat cells. That is where the similarity ends. They differ significantly in how they work, how much fat they can address, the recovery involved, the risks carried, and the type of patient each suits best.

This article sets out the key differences clearly so you can make an informed decision about which approach is right for your goals.

Fat Dissolving Injections vs Liposuction

How each treatment works

1. Fat dissolving injections

Fat dissolving injections use a solution containing deoxycholic acid, a bile acid naturally produced by the body, which is injected directly into a localised fat deposit. The solution breaks down the membrane of fat cells, which are then cleared gradually by the lymphatic system over several weeks. At Dr Hass Clinic, we use Aqualyx, a CE-marked product with an established clinical track record.

The procedure takes 20 to 40 minutes depending on the area treated. There is no surgery, no anaesthesia, and no incisions.

2. Liposuction

Liposuction is a surgical procedure performed under general or local anaesthesia. Small incisions are made in the skin, through which a thin tube called a cannula is inserted to physically suction fat from the body. It can remove significantly larger volumes of fat in a single procedure.

It requires a surgical environment, a recovery period measured in weeks, and carries the risks inherent to any surgical intervention.

Results: what each treatment can realistically achieve

This is the most important distinction to understand before choosing between the two.

Fat dissolving injections are a precision contouring tool. They are designed for patients who are at or near a healthy weight and have a specific, localised area that does not respond to diet and exercise — a double chin, a pocket of flank fat, or bra line fullness. The results are meaningful and permanent, but they are gradual and accumulate across multiple sessions.

Liposuction is a volume reduction procedure. It can remove significantly larger quantities of fat across broader areas in a single session and is better suited to patients looking for more substantial change. It does not guarantee smooth, even results, however. Contour irregularities and skin laxity issues are known complications, particularly where large volumes are removed.

Neither treatment is a substitute for weight loss. Both work best in patients who are at a stable, healthy weight.

Recovery: a significant difference

Fat dissolving requires no formal downtime. Most patients return to work and daily life the same day or the day after. Swelling peaks at 24 to 72 hours and settles within 1 to 2 weeks.

For a detailed breakdown, see our fat dissolving recovery and aftercare guide.

Liposuction recovery is considerably more demanding. Compression garments are typically worn for 4 to 6 weeks. Swelling and bruising can be significant and persistent. Most patients take at least 1 to 2 weeks off work, and strenuous activity is restricted for up to 6 weeks. Final results are not visible until swelling has fully resolved, which can take several months.

A third option: laser liposuction

For patients who want more significant fat reduction than injections can deliver but want to avoid traditional surgery, laser liposuction sits between the two.

At Dr Hass Clinic, laser liposuction is performed using a minimally invasive laser fibre that liquefies fat cells before they are removed, requiring only a micro-incision rather than the larger incisions used in traditional liposuction. It is performed under local anaesthesia rather than general anaesthesia, which significantly reduces the risk profile.

Crucially, it is combined simultaneously with Endolift, our laser skin tightening technology, which addresses one of the key limitations of both fat dissolving and traditional liposuction: skin laxity. The collagen stimulation triggered during treatment means the skin contracts as the fat is removed, rather than being left to manage the volume reduction on its own.

Recovery is shorter than traditional liposuction, with most patients back to normal activities within a few days to a week. Results are visible sooner, and the dual action on fat and skin makes it particularly well suited to areas like the double chin, jowls, and abdomen where skin quality is as important as fat volume.

For patients who fall between the two options above — too much fat for injections to address adequately, but unwilling to undergo general anaesthesia and weeks of surgical recovery — laser liposuction is often the most appropriate recommendation at Dr Hass Clinic.

Risk profiles

Fat dissolving injections

  • Common: swelling, bruising, tenderness, temporary firmness under the skin
  • Rare: nerve injury (particularly in the chin area), infection, skin irregularity
  • Serious complications are rare and largely technique-dependent

Liposuction

  • Common: swelling, bruising, numbness, temporary contour irregularities
  • More serious risks: infection, seroma (fluid accumulation), permanent skin irregularity, asymmetry, anaesthesia risks, deep vein thrombosis
  • As a surgical procedure, the risk profile is inherently higher regardless of practitioner skill

Cost

Fat dissolving injections have a lower cost per session but typically require 2 to 4 sessions per area. Liposuction carries a higher upfront cost but is usually a single procedure. The total cost comparison depends heavily on the number of areas being treated and the volume of fat involved.

For many patients treating one or two small areas, fat dissolving represents a significantly more cost-effective route to a permanent result. For patients seeking broad fat reduction across multiple large areas, the combined cost of multiple fat dissolving courses may approach or exceed a single liposuction procedure.

Am I a Good Candidate for Fat Dissolving Injections?

Which is right for you?

The answer comes down to three factors: the volume of fat you want to address, your tolerance for surgical risk and recovery, and your timeline for seeing results.

  • Fat dissolving is likely the better choice if you have a specific, localised deposit, want to avoid surgery and anaesthesia, cannot take extended time off, and are content with gradual results across a course of treatment.
  • Liposuction is likely the better choice if you are looking to address larger fat volumes, want a single procedure with more immediate volume reduction, and are prepared for a surgical recovery.

Some patients pursue both at different stages: fat dissolving for facial or smaller body areas, and liposuction for larger body contouring goals. These are not mutually exclusive.
