Start here, because every decision later in this guide depends on the answer.

Diastasis recti is a separation of the abdominal muscles along the connective tissue joining them. Pregnancy stretches this tissue, and in many women it doesn’t fully close afterwards. It can look identical to loose skin: soft, domed, or protruding, especially when seated. The two need entirely different treatments.

Self-test: lie on your back, knees bent. Place two fingers above the navel and lift your head and shoulders slightly. A gap of two finger-widths or more, with the tissue doming along the midline, suggests diastasis recti. Repeat below the navel too.

Why does postpartum skin behave differently?

The mechanics are the same as any skin laxity, but the postpartum picture has its own drivers, which is worth understanding before you look at timing or treatment.

Rapid stretch, rapid release. Skin expands over forty weeks, then loses that volume within days.
Oestrogen and relaxin rise sharply in pregnancy, affecting connective tissue elasticity, then fall after birth.
Breastfeeding extends the hormonal timeline, which is why many surgeons prefer to assess final skin outcome after weaning.
Multiple pregnancies compound the effect, drawing further on the same elastin reserve each time.

When is it safe to start treatment?

This is where breastfeeding status, birth type, and diastasis recti all feed into a single answer specific to you. The table below covers the general position for each.

Can diet, hydration, and exercise tighten it on their own?

These measures support general recovery and are worth doing regardless. They are not a treatment for established skin laxity, and no clinical evidence shows otherwise.

Gradual, stable weight return gives skin the best chance to retract on its own, more so than rapid loss.
Core and pelvic floor exercise, ideally physiotherapist-guided, improves muscle tone and posture, which can make skin appear firmer even where the skin itself hasn’t changed.
Hydration and a protein-adequate diet support general skin health, with no evidence of reversing established laxity.
Topical oils, collagen creams, and spa wraps may improve skin texture and comfort, but do not meaningfully tighten skin that has already lost elastin.

Which treatment actually works?

Endolift Body, the primary recommendation for most postpartum patients. What if diastasis recti is confirmed?

No skin treatment closes a muscle separation, since the problem sits beneath the skin, not in it. The right sequence:

Core rehabilitation first, with a women’s health physiotherapist. Closes many mild cases within 6 to 12 months.
Reassess. If the gap has closed, skin tightening can then address any remaining laxity.
Surgical repair, via muscle plication during abdominoplasty, where physiotherapy isn’t enough.
