Am I a Good Candidate for Nasolabial Filler?

Nasolabial filler works beautifully for the right patient — and falls short for the wrong one.

Here is an honest breakdown of who tends to see the best results, who should consider a different approach, and what a consultation will establish.

Signs you are a good candidate for nasolabial filler

Your folds are visible at rest, not just when you smile. Folds that appear on expression then disappear are a normal part of how the face moves. The patients who see the clearest results are those whose folds have become static — present even when the face is completely relaxed, giving a persistently tired or aged appearance.

Your folds are driven by localised volume loss. Nasolabial folds deepen for two different reasons: localised volume loss in the fold itself, or mid-face descent as the cheek fat pads reduce and drop with age. Direct fold filler works well for the first. The second is better addressed by restoring mid-face volume first. Dr Hasaneen assesses this distinction at every consultation — it is the most important factor in determining the right approach.

You have reasonable skin elasticity. Skin that retains some firmness adapts most cleanly to restored volume. Where significant laxity is present, the approach and realistic outcome need to be calibrated accordingly.

Your weight is stable. Weight changes alter facial fat distribution and affect how filler sits and how long it lasts. Patients at a stable weight see more predictable, longer-lasting results.

Your expectations are grounded. Nasolabial filler softens the fold — it does not erase it. The fold is a natural part of facial anatomy. The goal is a refreshed, more rested appearance, not a blank face.

Signs you may not be the right candidate for nasolabial filler

  • Your folds are primarily caused by mid-face descent — in this case, cheek filler or a combined approach is likely to produce a more natural result than treating the fold directly
  • You have significant skin laxity — filler alone may not achieve the result you are looking for; a skin-tightening treatment or different approach may be more appropriate
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding — treatment should be deferred
  • You have an active infection or skin condition in or near the treatment area — this must fully resolve before proceeding
  • You are taking blood-thinning medications — aspirin, ibuprofen, warfarin, or supplements such as fish oil should be disclosed at consultation.

What the consultation will establish

Candidacy requires physical assessment — anatomy, skin quality, and the cause of the fold cannot be determined from photographs alone. At Dr Hass Clinic, the consultation will cover:

  • Whether the fold is driven by localised loss or mid-face descent — the most clinically important distinction
  • Skin laxity and how this shapes the approach and expected outcome
  • The right volume for your anatomy and goals — see our guide to how much nasolabial filler you need
  • Whether a combined approach would produce a more natural result than treating the fold alone
  • Realistic results specific to your face, including what is achievable and how long it is likely to last

What results can you expect?

For good candidates, the improvement is visible straight away — a clear softening of the fold with a more rested, refreshed appearance. The final settled result is best assessed at two weeks once any swelling has resolved. Results typically last 9 to 18 months, depending on volume, product, and individual metabolism.
