If you’re considering fat dissolving injections, or you’ve just had your first session, understanding what to expect during recovery makes a significant difference. The process is straightforward, but the side effects can look alarming if you’re not prepared for them.

This guide walks you through exactly what happens to your body after fat dissolving treatment, day by day, and what you need to do to protect your results.

Fat Dissolving Injections - Treatment at Dr Hass Clinic

What happens to your body after fat dissolving injections?

Fat dissolving treatment uses a solution — most commonly Aqualyx — injected directly into pockets of stubborn fat. The solution breaks down the membranes of fat cells, which are then gradually cleared by the body’s lymphatic system over the following weeks.

This process is inherently inflammatory. The swelling, tenderness, and firmness you experience after treatment are not side effects to worry about. They are signs that the treatment is working.

Because the body is actively breaking down and eliminating fat tissue, the recovery experience is more pronounced than many injectable treatments. Knowing what is normal at each stage means you can recover with confidence rather than concern.

Fat dissolving recovery: day-by-day timeline

Immediately after treatment (day 0)

You will leave the clinic with visible swelling at the treated area. The skin may feel warm, tender, and firm to the touch. Some patients experience a burning or stinging sensation for 20 to 30 minutes after injection, which settles on its own.

What is normal:

  • Swelling and puffiness at the injection site
  • Redness and warmth
  • Tenderness when touching the area
  • Mild burning or stinging sensation

This is expected. You can return to your daily routine immediately as fat dissolving requires no formal downtime.

Days 1 to 3

This is the most intense phase of recovery. Swelling typically peaks between 24 and 72 hours after treatment. For areas such as the double chin or jowls, this can be quite pronounced. Some patients describe it as looking like they have a golf ball under the skin.

What is normal:

  • Significant swelling, particularly in the first 48 hours
  • Bruising may begin to appear
  • The area may feel hard or lumpy — this is normal and temporary
  • Tenderness and sensitivity to pressure
  • Possible mild headache if the chin or jaw area was treated

What to do:

  • Apply a cold compress (wrapped in a cloth, not directly on skin) to manage swelling
  • Sleep with your head slightly elevated if the face or neck was treated
  • Avoid touching or massaging the area unless instructed to do so
  • Stay well hydrated to support lymphatic drainage

Days 4 to 7

Swelling begins to ease during this phase, though the area may still feel firm and lumpy beneath the surface. Bruising, if present, will be at its most visible now before it starts to fade.

What is normal:

  • Gradual reduction in swelling
  • Bruising changing colour as it heals (yellow-green tones are a normal part of the healing process)
  • Continued firmness under the skin
  • Occasional itching as the area heals

What to avoid:

  • Strenuous exercise and activities that raise your heart rate significantly
  • Saunas, steam rooms, and hot baths
  • Alcohol, which can increase swelling and slow healing
  • Sun exposure to the treated area

Days 7 to 14

By the end of the first two weeks, most of the visible swelling will have settled. The area may still feel slightly firm, but the pronounced hardness should be resolving. Any bruising should be largely faded.

What to expect:

  • A noticeably flatter, softer treated area compared to days 1 to 3
  • Residual tenderness may still be present when pressing firmly
  • Skin may feel slightly sensitive

At this stage, most patients feel comfortable returning to all normal activities, including the gym.

Weeks 3 to 6

The body continues to process and eliminate the broken-down fat cells during this period. You will not see your final results yet. Fat dissolving works gradually, and the full outcome becomes visible over several weeks as the lymphatic system clears cellular debris.

Many patients notice meaningful changes from around week 4 to 6 after their first session.

When will I see final results?

Final results from a single fat dissolving session are typically visible 6 to 8 weeks after treatment. Most patients require 2 to 4 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart to achieve their desired outcome, depending on the size of the area being treated and the volume of fat present.

Results are cumulative, and each session builds on the last. At Dr Hass Clinic, your treatment plan is tailored during consultation so you know exactly what to expect from your specific course of treatment.

Fat dissolving aftercare: what to do and what to avoid

Do

  • Stay well hydrated. Drinking plenty of water supports the lymphatic system in clearing broken-down fat cells. Aim for at least 2 litres per day in the days following treatment.
  • Use a cold compress. In the first 48 to 72 hours, applying a cold compress for 10 to 15 minutes at a time helps manage swelling and discomfort.
  • Keep the area clean. Avoid applying make-up, lotions, or creams to the treated area for at least 24 hours after treatment.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing over any body areas that have been treated, to avoid friction and irritation.
  • Follow your practitioner’s specific instructions. Aftercare may vary slightly depending on the area treated and the product used.

Avoid

  • Vigorous exercise for the first 48 to 72 hours. Light walking is fine, but avoid anything that significantly raises your heart rate or causes you to sweat heavily.
  • Heat exposure including saunas, steam rooms, hot baths, and sunbeds, for at least one week post-treatment. Heat increases inflammation and can intensify swelling.
  • Alcohol for at least 48 hours after treatment, as it dilates blood vessels and can worsen bruising and swelling.
  • Massaging the treated area unless your practitioner has specifically advised this. In most protocols, massage is not recommended in the early recovery phase.
  • Sun exposure on treated areas. If going outdoors, apply a high-factor SPF to any treated facial or neck areas once the initial 24-hour window has passed.
  • Further injectables in the same area until the treatment has fully settled, usually after 4 to 6 weeks.

Managing discomfort during recovery

Mild discomfort and tenderness are normal in the days following fat dissolving treatment. Paracetamol is the recommended over-the-counter pain relief. Ibuprofen and other anti-inflammatory medications are generally best avoided in the initial 48 hours, as reducing inflammation too aggressively may interfere with the treatment response. Always follow the guidance given to you at your appointment.

The burning sensation that some patients experience immediately after injection is temporary and resolves quickly. If you experience significant pain, increasing pain after day 3, or any signs of infection such as spreading redness, fever, or discharge, contact your clinic promptly.

Body Injection

Is lumpy skin after fat dissolving normal?

Yes. Lumps, bumps, and uneven firmness under the skin after fat dissolving are completely normal and temporary. They are caused by localised inflammation and the body’s response to the treatment solution. In most cases, this resolves fully within 2 to 4 weeks.

If you have concerns about lumpiness that is worsening rather than improving, or that persists beyond 4 to 6 weeks, contact your practitioner for a review.

When should I contact my clinic?

Whilst fat dissolving recovery is generally predictable, there are circumstances in which you should contact Dr Hass Clinic:

  • Pain that worsens after the first 3 days rather than improving
  • Signs of infection including spreading redness, increasing warmth, fever, or any discharge
  • Lumpiness that is not improving after 6 weeks
  • Pronounced asymmetry once swelling has fully resolved
  • Any concern that feels outside what has been described to you as normal

We are always available to provide reassurance and to review any post-treatment concerns.
