Nasolabial filler is one of the more straightforward filler treatments to recover from.

The nasolabial folds sit in an area of moderate tissue thickness, which means swelling tends to be mild and predictable compared to areas like the lips or under-eyes.

Most patients leave the clinic and return to their day immediately. That said, understanding what is normal in the days that follow makes recovery easier and removes the anxiety that often comes with noticing something unexpected.

What to expect after nasolabial filler

Common and expected

The following effects are a normal part of the healing process and do not indicate a problem:

  • Mild swelling around the injection sites, typically settling within 3 to 5 days
  • Redness at the treatment area, usually resolving within a few hours
  • Tenderness when touching or pressing the area
  • Firmness along the treated fold, which softens as the filler integrates
  • Small injection marks that fade within 24 to 48 hours
  • Minor asymmetry in the first 48 hours due to uneven swelling

Swelling can temporarily make the treated area appear slightly fuller than the intended result. This settles as the tissue heals.

Less common

  • Bruising at the injection sites, more likely in patients who bruise easily or who have taken blood-thinning medications
  • Mild lumpiness beneath the skin in the first few days, which softens as the filler integrates into surrounding tissue
  • Temporary sensitivity to touch or temperature in the treated area

When to contact the clinic

The nasolabial fold area has a good blood supply, and serious complications are rare. However, contact Dr Hass Clinic promptly if you experience:

  • Pain that is increasing rather than improving after the first 48 hours
  • Skin that appears pale, grey, or mottled in or around the treatment area
  • Blistering or any skin breakdown
  • Swelling that is significantly worsening beyond the first 72 hours

These signs are uncommon but require prompt assessment to rule out vascular compromise.

Day-by-day nasolabial filler recovery timeline

Day 0 — immediately after treatment

The improvement to the nasolabial folds is visible straight away. You will notice a softening of the lines and a more rested, refreshed appearance even before any swelling begins. Mild redness and tenderness at the injection sites are normal at this stage.

The treated area may feel slightly firm to the touch. This is the filler sitting within the tissue before it begins to integrate. Most patients leave the clinic feeling comfortable and return to their normal routine the same day.

Days 1 to 3 — peak swelling

Swelling typically peaks between 24 and 72 hours after treatment. The nasolabial area is less prone to dramatic swelling than the lips or under-eyes, but mild puffiness and firmness are expected and completely normal during this period.

Minor asymmetry due to uneven swelling between the two sides is common at this stage. This does not reflect the final result and resolves as swelling settles evenly.

If bruising is present, it usually appears during days 1 to 3 and is typically small and localised around the injection points.

Days 3 to 5 — swelling settles

By this point the worst of the swelling should be behind you. The treated area begins to feel softer and less tender, and the result becomes more refined as the tissue settles. Bruising, if present, will be fading and can be covered with makeup from 24 hours after treatment.

Any firmness or lumpiness under the skin at this stage is the filler still integrating into surrounding tissue. It resolves on its own and should not be massaged unless you have been specifically advised to do so by your practitioner.

Days 5 to 7 — comfortable for most patients

The majority of patients feel fully comfortable socially by the end of the first week. Swelling is minimal, any bruising is well on its way to resolving, and the nasolabial area feels natural rather than firm. The result is clearly visible, though still refining.

Week 2 — final result

At two weeks, the filler is fully integrated and the result is assessable. This is the point at which any refinements or review can be meaningfully discussed. If you have concerns about symmetry or the degree of correction, the two-week mark is the right time to raise them.

Nasolabial filler aftercare instructions

Do:

  • Apply a cold compress gently for the first 6 to 12 hours to reduce swelling. Wrap it in a cloth rather than applying ice directly to the skin.
  • Sleep on your back with your head slightly elevated for the first night or two to minimise fluid pooling in the treated area.
  • Keep the area clean and avoid applying heavy makeup directly over the injection sites for 24 hours.
  • Stay well hydrated. Hyaluronic acid filler attracts water as it integrates, and good hydration supports this process.
  • Use SPF daily over the treated area. UV exposure accelerates filler breakdown over time and affects skin quality in the surrounding area.
  • Contact the clinic if anything concerns you. Dr Hass Clinic patients receive direct aftercare contact details.

Avoid:

  • Touching, pressing, or massaging the treated area for at least one week unless specifically instructed to do so. Pressure in the early days can displace filler before it has integrated.
  • Strenuous exercise for 24 to 48 hours. Raised heart rate and body temperature increase swelling and bruising risk.
  • Alcohol for 24 to 48 hours after treatment. Alcohol dilates blood vessels and increases the likelihood of bruising and swelling.
  • Heat exposure including saunas, steam rooms, and very hot showers for 48 to 72 hours.
  • Active skincare ingredients such as retinoids, acids, and exfoliants over the treated area for one week.
  • Dental procedures or facial treatments in the same area for at least two weeks after treatment.
  • Blood-thinning medications or supplements (aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E) immediately post-treatment unless medically required, as these can worsen bruising.
